Benan Kazdağlı is a PhD student in History at Boğazici University. He earned his BSc in Economics from Galatasaray University and his MA in History from Istanbul 29 Mayis University. His master's thesis was on the 18th-century grain merchants of Istanbul, a predominantly Muslim merchant group most active in the Black Sea whom the thesis argues to be a merchant guild. As part of the JANET project team, Benan is translating Ottoman documents related to the Janissaries stationed in the north of the Black Sea.
