The murder of the French baker Boze is probably an expression of an anti-European sentiment of the Janissaries of Kandiye, which was probably founded in the economic rivalry between the two groups in the area. It is also interesting that the victim is presented in the source as a "zimmi", which we know was not true and was the product of Janissary propaganda to the Porte. Although he is mentioned as a zimmi in the document, French sources explicitly mention that he was in fact a French protégé. His status as a zimmi has been presented to the Porte by an ilam written under the influence of Kandiye's Janissary officers. 1
